They say the best camera you have is the one in your hand, and I would expand that to say the best place to photograph birds is your own backyard. Exotic places are lovely, and colorful birds you don't see everyday are exciting. But house sparrows are sometimes the only bird available to people who live in urban environments, and we can grow to love them too.
This book is a collection of photographs and reflections on the "common" sparrow.
From the book:
The Friend I Have
I once wished
for a raven
bold, wild,
wicked smart.
A crow would do
clever,
dark-eyed,
full of stories.
But neither came.
So I sat with a sparrow
small
plain
unafraid.
And in time
I forgot what I lacked
because he stayed.
